그는 먼저 다가와 인사를 전했다. “안녕하셨냐”는 말과 함께 였다. 입국후 언론과의 첫 대면이었지만 부담감 보다는 반가움이 앞선 모습이었다.
재범. 스포츠칸은 최근 두차례에 걸쳐 우연히 그를 만났다. 만남은 서울 강북의 모처에서, 그리고 서울 강남의 한 녹음실 스튜디오에서 각각 이뤄졌다.
“건강히 잘 지냈습니다. 한국에 너무 오고 싶었어요. 공항에 팬분들이 많이 나와주셨는데 놀라기도 했고, 또 많이 고맙기도 했습니다.”
그는 주변 스태프들이 오갈 때면 허리를 숙여 공손히 인사를 했고, 시종 두 손을 모은 채 상냥하고 친절한 미소로 주위 사람들의 이야기에 동참했다.
“그간 마음 고생이 많았겠다”는 인삿말에 대해 그는 “네”라는 짧은 답과 함께 또다시 고개를 조아렸다.
그의 몸은 온통 멍으로 얼룩져 있었다. 특히 팔꿈치와 팔목 등에는 크고 작은 상처가 가득했다.
“A.O.M 멤버들과 비보이 연습만 하느라 이렇게 됐습니다. 몸은 힘들어도 마음은 편했습니다.”
그와의 첫번째 만남에는 미국서 같이 온 부모와 헌칠한 키의 남동생, 그리고 미국서 재범이 소속된 비보이팀 A.O.M의 멤버들도 함께 있었다. 부친은 서울이 마냥 신기한 A.O.M을 위해 비빔밥을 손수 비벼주고 있던 중이었다.
비빔밥을 먹던 A.O.M의 외국인 한 멤버는 “음식이 입에 맞냐”는 질문에 “내 가슴에는 아시아의 영혼이 담겨 있다”고 답했다. 재범과 어울리면서 아시아, 그리고 한국에 대해 제법 많이 알게 됐다는 설명이었다.
재범은 그간 인터넷을 통해 끊임없이 팬들과 조우해왔다. 자신의 심경을 수시로 고백했고, 틈틈이 노래 부르는 영상과 비보이 연습 영상을 게재했다. 재범은 “고마운 팬들에 대한 보답이었다”고 말했다. 최근 미국 톱가수인 B.O.B의 국내 음원에 피처링을 하게 된 것에 대해선 “나 스스로에게 크게 영광스런 일이었다”고 기쁜 마음을 드러냈다.
이날 재범에게는 국내서 촬영되고 있는 영화 ‘하이퍼네이션 3D’의 대본이 전해졌다. 그는 대본을 꼼꼼히 읽으며 동선을 파악해갔다.
“비보잉은 크게 걱정이 안됩니다. 늘 해오던 것이었으니까요. 다만 연기는 더 노력해야할 부분일 겁니다. 영어 대본 보다는 한국어 대본이 더 편합니다.”
재범과의 두번째 만남은 모 가수의 노래를 도와주는 피처링 녹음 현장에서 있었다. 그는 능숙하게 녹음을 마쳤다. 성숙해진 노래 솜씨를 유감없이 발휘했고, 당시 녹음에 참가한 모든 이들이 만족감을 드러냈다.
재범 은 영화 ‘하이퍼네이션 3D’ OST에 수록될 노래 ‘데몬’ 등 자신이 부른 노래를 가을께 한국과 미국, 아시아 전역에 발표하고 다시 무대에 설 예정이다.
‘데몬’(Demon)은 마이클 잭슨의 ‘데인저러스’의 작곡가 겸 영화의 음악 감독을 맡은 미국 유명 프로듀서 테디 라일리가 쓴 곡이다. 이 노래는 당초 마이클 잭슨이 사망하기전 제공될 예정이었지만 그의 갑작스런 사망으로 재범에게 왔다.
‘데몬’ 등의 노래를 바탕으로 미국서도 활동을 하게 될 재범은 현지 DMW(디지털 미디어 와이어)와 손을 잡은 상태다. 매니지먼트를 대행할 연예 전문 변호사인 네드 셔먼에 대해 재범은 “너무 좋은 고마운 사람”이라고 묘사했다. 국내 매니지먼트 계약에 대해서는 아직 이렇다할 반응을 보이지 않았다.
현재 재범은 영화 ‘하이퍼네이션 3D’ 촬영에 매진하고 있다. 동료들과 배우, 스태프들과 격의 없이 촬영에 참가하며 분위기를 주도하고 있는 중이다.

As other staff members began to arrive, he stood up and bowed deeply to greet them with his hands collected in front of him. He gave a sincere, genuine smile and participated in their conversations.
When asked, "Hasn't it been hard for you?" He gave a short reply, "Yes," and bowed his head once more.
His body is covered in bruises, especially his elbows and wrist.
"I've been practicing b-boying with the AOM members which is why it's like this. Even if my body is tired, my heart is comfortable."
The first meeting with Jaebum was with his parents, his tall younger brother, and the members of the b-boy team, AOM. His parents were in the middle of mixing up a bowl of bibimbap for the AOM members, who were still amazed with everything Seoul had to offer.
When one of the members was asked, "Is it to your tastes?" he answered, "My heart has the soul of Asia." He explained that his relationship with Jaebum helped him learn more about Asia, especially Korea.
Jaebum had continuously conversed with his fans through the internet, confessing his feelings and uploading videos of him singing or dancing. Jaebum stated, "It was my way of responding to my thankful fans." Regarding working with America's top artist B.o.B., he stated, "It was such an honorable experience for me."
On this day, Jaebum received the script for Hype Nation and read it carefully.
"I'm not too worried about b-boying. It's something I've always done. I need to work harder with acting, though. Korean script is more comfortable for me than an English script."
The second meeting with Jaebum was while he was featuring for an artist at a recording studio. He finished off the recording in a professional manner and expressed his mature singing style. Everyone at the scene seemed satisfied.
'Demon,' to be included in Hype Nation's OST, will be released in Korea, America, and then the rest of Asia by fall. He will be returning to the stage.
'Demon' is written by Teddy Riley, the composer of Michael Jackson's 'Dangerous.' 'Demon' was originally written for Michael Jackson but due to his sudden death, the song was given to Jaebum.
Jaebum is currently working with DMW. Regarding Ned Sherman, Jaebum stated, "He's such a thankful person." He has yet to answer anything regarding a management contract within Korea.
